I have known about Juneteenth for fairly long time... looking back, it should have been longer... but I admit that I never really took the time to fully try to understand why it's such an important day in American History. With the events of the last few weeks, a lot of people might be hearing about it for the first time.
I like to think of myself as a smart dude... I know I am an "ally" and I know I am inclusive... but I also know that I have a lot to learn and there are ways I can be better at it... one of them is making a point to understand things and not just know about them. It didn't take me long to start asking "Why is this day not more commonly known about?" and "Why do we not celebrate it the same we we would July 4th?"... I mean we celebrate Cinco de Mayo... and a lot of people still think it's Mexican Independence Day (News Flash: It's NOT). Juneteenth should be a National Holiday and celebrated as such... get rid of, oh I don't know, Columbus Day maybe?!
